Deep Drawing Process with Crack Prevention Control
The Metal Formed and Stamped Parts category includes deep-drawn and complex-formed components. Deep drawing is one of the most demanding stamping processes, and material selection plays a critical role in preventing cracking and ensuring stable forming quality.
DC03 deep-drawing cold-rolled steel is commonly used because of its excellent ductility and stable material flow during forming. It reduces thinning in the drawn area and helps prevent cracking at the bend radius. For drawing processes, a fundamental design rule is applied: the draw radius should be equal to or greater than the material thickness. Although this is an industry-standard guideline, it is not always strictly followed in production. In this process, it is consistently applied to ensure forming reliability.
A custom medical equipment housing with a 35 mm draw depth and complex curved geometry was developed as a case study. Multiple suppliers were unable to complete the forming without cracking. After switching to DC03 and optimizing drawing steps and die clearance, the part was successfully formed in a single trial without defects, meeting all dimensional and structural requirements.
Dimensional Accuracy and Surface Processing Options
For Metal Formed and Stamped Parts, 3D shape tolerance is controlled within ±0.15 mm, while inner cavity assembly tolerance is maintained within ±0.1 mm. These tolerances can be further tightened depending on product requirements.
In addition to DC03 steel, SUS304 stainless steel and 6061 aluminum are also used depending on strength, weight, and corrosion resistance requirements. Material thickness ranges from 0.5 mm to 4.0 mm, with additional capability for thicker or thinner custom specifications based on forming feasibility.
Surface finishing options include brushing, anodizing, powder coating, and electroplating. Finishing methods can be selected individually or combined depending on the required appearance and functional performance.
Deep drawing quality depends heavily on material flow behavior during forming. Uneven flow can result in localized thinning and eventual cracking. Control of tooling geometry and forming parameters is therefore essential to maintain uniform wall thickness and stable forming results.
The factory operates with a team of 14 skilled technicians dedicated to forming and tooling adjustment. Complex samples are typically completed within 5–10 days, based on drawing or physical sample input. The standard warranty period is three months.
